Aluminium

SINTEF offers expertise along the entire value chain from primary production to product development and performance. As a result of its low weight, outstanding corrosion properties and excellent mechanical properties, aluminium is one of the most important construction materials in the world.

Aluminium is used in a large range of applications like building, oil & gas platforms, packaging and electronics. Particularly in transport applications (automotive, trains, aircraft, ships) aluminium contributes to lower CO2 emissions by reduction of weight. Norway is a large producer of aluminium, and the industry, NTNU and SINTEF are internationally recognized for their expertise within aluminium production, processing and application.

SINTEF offers expertise along the entire value chain from primary production to product development and performance, including:

  • Primary production
  • Melt treatment, solidification, heat treatment, alloy development and recycling
  • Forming including extrusion
  • Surface technology and corrosion protection
  • Physical metallurgy and characterization
  • Process and product development including modeling and testing
