The laboratory is located at Gløshaugen and the use established wind farms for testing.
NOWITECH (Norwegian Research Centre for Offshore Wind Technology) is one of eight research centres for renewable energy appointed in february 2009.
The main objective was to develop a cost-effective maintenance system for wind farms, and to establish a foundation for making the right decisions in terms of reliability, operation and maintenance when new wind farms are to be specified. Knowledge and experience from hydropower plants was used where it had relevance.
The NOWIcob model simulates the maintenance activities and related logistics of offshore wind farms to estimate availability and operation and maintenance COSTs and analyse O&M strategies.
This project seeks to apply lean principles to the offshore wind farm project lifecycle. The primary LEANWIND objective is to provide cost reductions across the offshore wind farm lifecycle and supply chain through the application of lean principles and the development of state-of-the-art technologies and tools.
