Formation Physics Laboratory

Published 24 June 2016

The Formation Physics Laboratory provides laboratory services covering a wide variety of aspects within petroleum rock mechanics and related areas. We do testing both separately for external clients, and as part of the Formation Physics Department’s research projects.

We have experience with a variety of different rocks, and have developed sophisticated experimental procedures for revealing their acoustic and mechanic properties under near in situ conditions.

TESTING RELEVANT FOR OVERBURDEN

Rock Physics

  • Overburden characterization for improved seismic resolution
  • Characterization of ultrasonic‐ and mechanical anisotropy
  • Dynamic measurement from low (Hz) to ultrasonic frequency

Borehole stability

  • Simulated drilling operations in hollow cylinder tests
  • Drilling fluid sensitivity
  • Specialized tests on small samples (cavings)

Creep

  • Triaxial and oedometer creep tests
  • Permanent barrier tests with hollow cylinder
  • Screening tests on small samples

TESTING RELEVANT FOR RESERVOIR CONDITIONS

Solids production

  • Hollow cylinder tests with radial fluid flow (brine/oil/gas)
  • Simulation of production conditions

Special stress paths

  • Uniaxial strain condition with radial permeability measurement, at reservoir stress conditions
  • Thermal effects at injector wells
