This report describes some methods applicable for the railway industry within the area of safety analysis. The main question we have focused on is: How will the measures to reduce costs (both maintenance and delay time costs) affect safety? To be able to answer this question we have developed a type of change analysis method for the evaluation of the effect on safety due to the introduction of condition monitoring equipment for maintenance of railway components. The method is adapted to this specific means for increased efficiency, but in the generic case any measures to reduce costs can be evaluated.
In addition to the change analysis method, the report also describes a suite of methods for task analysis and human reliability analysis that have been selected in order to support prevention of human errors. These are Goals-Means Task Analysis, Operation Sequence Diagramming, Task Features Description and Action Error Mode Analysis.
