Accessibility to health services among people with disabilities in southern Africa
The large majority of people with disabilities live in developing countries, very often under poor conditions, lacking basic support and services that could have improved their lives considerably.
This research project will study the availability and accessibility of health services to people with disabilities and the degree of inclusion of people with disabilities in health service delivery in South Africa and Malawi. The project comprises two complementary studies:
- An anthropological study looking at Difficulties faced by disabled people in poor communities when Accessing Health Services (the DAHS study).
- A study of Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices; combining a survey among individuals with and without disabilities and qualitative interviews with health care providers (the KAP study).
