Hurtigruten - The Norwegian Coastal Voyage

The Norwegian Coastal Voyage / Hurtigruten is called the most beautiful sea journey in the world. True or not, a voyage on Hurtigruten is a magnificent experience you will never forget.  Hurtigruten offers a year-round, scheduled service with daily departures from all 34 ports of call along the Norwegian coast, between Bergen on the west coast and Kirkenes close to the russian border. A round trip takes 11 days and the fleet consists of 11 vessels. On your way to/from TRISTAN VII in Tromsø you may for instance embark/disembark in Bergen, Molde, or Trondheim. The Hurtigruten terminal in Tromsø is just 300 meters from the conference hotel. Hurtigruten is very popular, particularly in summer. You should book as early as possible.

The Lofoten islands

is an archipelago north of the Arctic circle, well known for its exceptional natural beauty. It can be reached by plane, boat (including Hurtigruten), or car. See http://www.lofoten-info.no/  for more information.

Norway in a nutshell

... is the most popular round trip in Norway. If your flight takes you through Oslo, Norway in a nutshell is an excellent way to go to / from Bergen, and you may combine it with the Norwegian Coastal Voyage / Hurtigruten. See http://www.norwaynutshell.com/ for more information.

Marathon race

Midnight Sun Marathon  will take place in Tromsø June 19 2010.

Svalbard and Spitsbergen

While you are at it, you might just as well go further north. Between 74 and 81 degrees North, the Arctic islands of Svalbard are located halfway between mainland Norway and The North Pole. Svalbard offers untouched, arctic wilderness with vast mountain areas, magnificent glaciers, and polar bears. It is a very important place for various types of research, see Svalbard Science Forum. Svalbard is under Norwegian sovereignty. The largest island is Spitsbergen, with the administrative center called Longyearbyen. The islands also have a Russian settlement, Barentsburg. There are regular flights that take you from Tromsø to Longyearbyen in less than 2 hours. For more information on Svalbard, see http://www.svalbard.net/ .
