The main objective of this project is to develop new knowledge on electrical insulating materials (gases, solids and liquids) and insulation systems necessary for design and testing of reliable high voltage power equipment in harsh subsea environment.
Reliable power supply and distribution components are of vital importance for subsea processing. However, sufficiently reliable high voltage concepts to meet the need for enhancing oil recovery (IOR) and increasing the life of known oil fields (tail end production) are lacking today. Therefore this calls for technology improvements, where the knowledge and improvement of the long term performance of high voltage power equipment is of vital importance. This can only be implemented by using qualified electrical insulation materials and systems.
In an overall perspective it is a question of reliable power supply and transmission - from onshore power generation, through components like cables, transformers, power electronic converters, electric motors, to processing equipment like compressors and pumps. Long distance power transmission and power levels of tens of MW reinforce these challenges.
The problems involve limitations and capabilities of the individual high voltage components, as well as worst case stress to these components when operating in systems for specific applications.
