  • Excellent midterm review of NOWITECH by international evaluation panel (April 2013)

According to terms for the CEER scheme (Centre of Environmental-friendly Energy Research, in Norwegian: FME), the Centres shall go through a midterm evaluation about 4 years after start-up. This process is now on-going with an international review panel consisting of two scientific experts and two generalist experts having prepared their assessment of NOWITECH. Their report gives a very positive evaluation of NOWITECH; quoting:

    Research activities:
"The research work is of highest international standard."

"In less than four years the Centre has become a well-recognized member of the scientific community, seen as being in the front with regard to deep water wind technology, in particular floating systems. This is a remarkable achievement."

    Internationalization:
"NOWITECH has become an internationally recognised organisation for research on offshore wind power,..."

    Researcher training, engagement in education:
"An excellent scientific programme has been established between SINTEF, IFE and NTNU with 54 PhD & post doc students [25 is financed directly by NOWITECH; the others are through other projects carried out in alignment with NOWITECH], 64 peer-reviewed publications, 67 conference papers and 19 invited keynotes."

    Plans for final three-year period
The ambitious plan presented for the final thee-year period is a well-defined and consistent continuation of the current work. Milestones and deliverables are well presented and seem to be realistic. The well-established team and the extended infrastructure give promise of significant achievements, even more so than during the past years.

Organisation and Management of the Centre
"The Centre has developed into a highly visible research organisation with broad international contacts and international research partners."
"The Centre is well organized and led by a highly competent and deeply engaged Director, supported by an efficient management group."

Conclusion and recommendations to the Centre
"NOWITECH has progressed well towards becoming an internationally recognised organisation for research on deep sea wind power, with a uniquely comprehensive research agenda on this topic. The Centre is a well-managed unit in which communication and exchange of experience between all partners seem to run smoothly."

    Read the full report here.

The Research Council of Norway will apply the report for their further assessment of NOWITECH giving their final evaluation and recommendations for NOWITECH by fall 2013.

  • To nye år for Windcluster Mid-Norway.

• The 'Roadmap to the deployment of offshore wind energy in the Central and Southern North Sea (2020-2030) is now available
The WINDSPEED consortium are pleased to announce that the ‘Roadmap to the deployment of offshore wind energy in the Central and Southern North Sea (2020 – 2030)' is now available.

This Roadmap represents the final deliverable of the WINDSPEED project. It has a dual objective. Firstly, it aims to present an ambitious but realistic target for offshore wind with minimum negative impacts on other sea functions present in the Central and Southern North Sea basin in the time frame to 2030. Secondly, it aims to identify actions and milestones required to achieve this target.

In support of this roadmap, the other deliverables of work package 6 have also been published, these include:

D6.1 – Scenarios for offshore wind including spatial interactions and grid issues
D6.2 – Consequences of WINDSPEED scenarios for other sea use functions
D6.3 – Grid Implications: Optimal design of a subsea power grid in the North Sea

  • It is perhaps ironic that when it comes to offshore, one of wind energy’s biggest challenges has nothing to do with wind. Building a wind farm several miles from shore is a significant feat in its own right, but the industry is waking up to the fact that the real issue is getting the power back. Read more here.
