Metallography

Metallography is the science and art of preparing a metal surface for analysis by grinding, polishing, and etching to reveal microstructual constituents.

The metallographic laboratory at SINTEF can do analysis of the microstructure with the help of:

  • Mechanical, chemical and electrochemical preparation techniques.
  • Light optical microscopy
  • Stereo microscopy
  • Measurement of electrical conductivity
  • Macro- and micro-hardness measurements
  • Image analyses/quantitative microscopy
  • Macro- and micro-imaging

In addition the metallographic laboratory at SINTEF does the specimen preparation for:

  • Scanning Electron Microscopy
  • Transmission Electron Microscopy
