Optimization

Optimization means finding optimal solutions to complex problems in industry or the public sector.

Using optimization and planning technology results in better customer service, effective use of resources, reduced costs and less environmental damage.

Many companies face challenges regarding their own use of resources. Examples of this are planning, use of personnel, equipment, distributions systems, storage, or use of natural resources.  Other challenges might come from complex designs.

All of these challenges have many possible solutions, and it can be difficult to make the right choice. An important success criterion, however, is using correct modern optimization methods. This is where SINTEF ICT’s highly skilled Optimisation Group can be of assistance. Our group comprises competent and experienced personnel, making us the perfect partner for solving complex planning and design problems in industry, management and the public sector.

Examples of how optimization can be used

During the past few years we have worked on complex projects in the following application areas:

Areas of competence

Most companies face the challenge of choosing the best solution for different tasks in their operations. Some of these can be solved exactly using little computation time, while for others the exact solution can never be found. In this case we must use the closest possible solution. What is especially important here is using the correct method to reach an answer. Our group has broad competence within the area of combinational optimization enabling us to correctly analyze a task, chose the right method, or develop new ones if needed.  Our areas of competence include:
